Dig Dug and Dig Dug 2 merge to form one dirty DS title.

Namco will be updating its classic Dig Dug franchise for the Nintendo DS, the latest issue of Famitsu reveals. In Japan, the new game is going by the tentative name of Dig Dug Digging Strike. Digging Strike combines elements from the original Dig Dug and its successor, Dig Dug II. The top screen shows an overhead view of the stage, similar to Dig Dug II. The bottom screen shows the stage in classic Dig Dug side view as you dig.

Namco has created a fun story for Digging Strike, featuring Hori Taizou, the father of Mister Driller star Hori Susumu. One day, the Horis get a phone call, asking for their assistance in clearing beasts that have appeared throughout the land. The call is actually for Hori Susumu, who’s famous for his recent drilling heroics. Hori Taizou, however, believing that he’s still got what it takes to be a hero, heads off to accomplish the task in place of his son.

Taizou is the main character that you control as you dig your way underground. Your goal is to defeat a single large boss character that has taken over the stage. Enemies move around underground with you, collecting food. Should they get their hands on food, they float up to the surface and are then consumed by the boss character, which then evolves into a more difficult form. You’ve got to avoid this by taking out food and enemies under ground.

You have a number of weapons and items at your disposal outside of just your drill. Underground, you’ll find magnets, bombs and boxing gloves which can be used to defeat enemies. You’ll also find parts strewn about underground. By collecting these, you can build up a new weapon as you play. Once you’ve completed the weapon and cleared the stage, you spin a roulette to attempt to win the weapon for use in the next level. Over ten weapons are included in the game, giving you faster and more powerful drilling capabilities as well as longer drill reach.

Taking out enemies is fine and all, but to actually defeat the boss, Taizou has to call on some help. By collecting special power ups, you switch to Hori Susumu Time, during which you control Susumu in a vehicle above the ground. Susumu can do direct damage to the boss, burying it deeper in the island and creating cracks in the surface, which eventually lead to the island’s collapse. The type of vehicle that Susumu uses is determined by the power ups that you manage to get your hands on.

Other characters, some new, some old, will make an appearance in Digging Strike. You’ll recognize the fish-like enemies from all the classic Dig Dug games here. In addition, Hori Taizo’s eldest son, Hori Ataru, plays a role in the game, serving as your opponent in versus mode.

That’s right, Dig Dug is going two player with Digging Strike. Two players can compete via WiFi in a versus mode where your goal is to collect coins while hindering your opponent’s progress.

Namco is planning a 9/8 Japanese release for Digging Strike in Japan. Although it hasn’t been announced yet, we’re expecting a US release as well.
