New PS3 update brings support for PS2 drives
Your PS3 can now have Sony.”>PS2 support if you want it.
We’re not kidding folks. Sony just released a new, standalone update for the PlayStation 3 that’ll let you store cache data on it, which makes it a rather interesting draw for games that use a PS2 HDD. That basically means that, for those interested, you can now store map packs from SOCOM and, for MMO players, your Final Fantasy XI game data can also be kept on the PS3 and used from there.
The only downside is that many games had their HDD functionality removed in the US before they were released, meaning that games like Final Fantasy X or Kingdom Hearts won’t be able to use this function.
You can find the standalone file on the PlayStation store for downloading. It’s 7MB in size, so it shouldn’t take too long to download. Just remember that this won’t update your firmware, so don’t be surprised if the number on your FW doesn’t change.
