It seems that New Zealand has its own game-hating Jack Thompson counterpart. Get a load of New Zealand Chief Censor Bill Hastings, who says parents who purchase violent video games for their children should be prosecuted.
“They might think the offence is silly, but it ain’t,” Hastings told The Dominion Post yesterday. If someone was caught knowingly giving a minor access to restricted video games, the punishment could be up to three months imprisonment or a fine of up to US$ 10,000. Fortunately, no one has been prosecuted just yet.
Hastings believes that the prosecution would send out what he calls “shock value” to other parents, which would deter them from making the same infraction. “It would send out a message that the enforcement agency means business,” he said.
