News Flash! Sony Patents for PSP Keyboard and Cellphone Attachments Revealed
The good folks at Ars Technica have turned up some tantalizing news regarding possible (we feel it’s best to err on the side of caution for now) patents for keyboard and cellphone attachments for the PSP. As they say, the keyboard attachment is nothing new, and neither are the rumors concerning the cellphone attachment, but they seem to have faded into obscurity in the months after they initially broke cover. This new discovery will doubtlessly thrust them back into the limelight.
When Sony upgraded the PSP’s firmware to version 2.0, it included a web browser. Using this software would be tough given the lack of a built-in keyboard, so we suppose the keyboard attachment will really be welcomed by some. We disagree with Ars Technica’s assessment that the cellphone attachment won’t be very popular if ever it’ll see the light of day, though; the vast number of PSP fanatics outside the States would love very much to be able to make calls and/or send text messages using their PSPs and on their home countries’ GSM/CDMA cellphone frequencies. VoIP, which the PSP is going to support, isn’t going to be very popular outside the States just yet.
Let’s see where all this goes. It’s the Apple-patent thing all over again…
