Ninety Nine Nights – Hands On And Screens
Kikizo have squeezed in some time with Phantagram and Q? Entertainment’s epic tactical action strategy game, Ninety Nine Nights. The build they played was apparently a Japanese demo disc currently doing the rounds over there in the far east. Kikizo brings up the sensible point that Microsoft Japan should have released this as a download rather than a physical demo disc.

The demo gives you control of nymp- er, I mean Inphyy, the scarlet clad female we’ve seen in so many of the screens so far as she battles against a horde of evil orcs. Two attack buttons are available to you to perform a number of combination attacks and maneuvers (although Kikizo mentions that the depth of these combos currently doesn’t approach that seen in the Dynasty Warriors games). Dashing is controlled using the “R” trigger, and blocking using the “L” trigger, Inphyy can also issue simple commands such as “guard left flank, guard right flank”, by using the directional pad.
Somewhat worrying is the fact that Kikizo reckons that despite the five months between the games last public showing at TGS and the release of this public demo there is constant pop in and the frame rate is still quite choppy. The unstable frame rate in particular is quite distressing as the number of enemies currently on screen is somewhere in the neighborhood of 500, about 1/4 of Mizuguchi’s initial promise of 2,000. With only a month left before the Japanese release on April 20th, let’s hope the boys and girls at Q? and Phantagram can get things ship shape, post haste!
