Ninja Gaiden comparison: Black and Sigma
Don’t worry folks, this isn’t flamebait. Cinemablend took some time out to do a quick comparison of the Xbox and PS3 versions of the Ninja Gaiden games, and they note that while the differences are only noticeable in the details, the overall effect shows in how Team Ninja added extra graphical goodness into Ninja Gaiden Sigma without detracting from the fast-paced ninja gameplay.
For instance, one thing you might notice in the picture above is that the PS3’s version of Ryu’s armor is more detailed (just click on the screenshots to see them at different magnifications). In the PS3 version, you can see the chain links on his leg armor, as well as the gap between his big toe and his four smaller toes on his sandals.
If there’s one thing that Cinemablend really noticed, which we sometimes take for granted, it’s the lighting differences between the two games. Cinemablend explains it thus:
One thing to note, though, is that the lighting effects on the PS3 version are slightly disappointing, only because the shaders used for character shadowing isn’t much of an enhancement over the Xbox version. Check out the screens with the white ninjas – they look nice, but at the same time Black isn’t light-years away (lighting wise) from Sigma. Maybe it’s just the room. You can notice, however, that there are more light sources on the characters in the PS3 version. The Xbox has some of the light sourcing as part of the textures, where-is all the of the light sourcing on the PS3 version seems to be refractive.
They’re similar in gameplay and, it seems, somewhat similar in looks. One thing you can’t deny, however, is the way the Ninja Gaiden series make you feel. And boy, does slashing through waves of misguided ninjas feel good. In the meantime, why not magnify the comparison pics below to judge for yourself.
