The Copper Innovations Group has decided to file a lawsuit against both Nintendo and Sony for copyright infringement. According to the lawsuit, the controllers of both the PlayStation 3 and Wii are in violation of a patent that the Copper Innovations Group filed back in 1996.
The patent Copper Innovations filed has a method for wirelessly connecting devices to a system and sorting the input via hardware identification numbers associated with each transmission. If the description is accurate, then the technology does sound similar to that found in the wireless controllers of both the PS3 and Wii.
The company is now seeking damages plus interest, legal fees, as well as an injunction which prevents Sony, Nintendo or any of their agents from infringing on their patent. As of this article’s writing, Sony, Nintendo, or Copper Innovations have not given out an official statement regarding this lawsuit.
In the past, the Immersion Corporation filed and won a lawsuit against Sony. This lead to more companies suing Sony about the technology they used in their consoles. It might be good to keep a close eye on this issue since a victory for Copper Innovations could mean another string of lawsuits against gaming companies in the months to come.
