Nintendo bags billions in second quarter fiscal year financial report

Nintendo bags billions in their September finace reports - Image 1The numbers are in for Nintendo’s finances for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2008. Nintendo’s net sales for the six-month period ending September 30 is now at Â¥ 694.8 billion (US$ 6.09 billion) – that’s a 132.5 % increase since the same fiscal period last year.

The company reports that a large chunk of these profits – around 77.9 % – was attributed to sales around the world. North America gets the lion’s share at Â¥ 267.9 billion (US$ 2.35 billion) sales, with Europe following along with Â¥ 246.1 billion (US$ 2.16 billion). Figures from the rest of the globe adds a further Â¥ 27.0 billion (US$ 237 million).

Breaking these figures into specific hardware sales, the big N is apparently reaping the benefits of the phenomenal sales of its DS and Wii consoles. The DS reportedly picked up a total of 13.35 million sales in the last six months, with worldwide sales since its launch now at 53.64 million units. Here’s a breakdown of how many DS have been sold according to its regions:

  • Japan: 19.71 million
  • North America: 16.06 million
  • Worldwide: 17.88

The Wii doesn’t appear to be doing so bad either. Nintendo reports that their next-gen console has 13.17 million sales since its launch last year, with 7.33 million of the sales being attributed to the last six months. As for the global breakdown:

  • Japan: 3.67 million
  • North America: 5.46 million
  • Worldwide: 4.04 million

With regards to software/games, the DS has enjoyed 259.48 million sales since its launch. Top sellers among its games are Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, with combined sales now at 12.17 million copies worldwide since their launch. Brain Age 1 and Brain Age 2 sold at a larger total of 17.19 million copies. Wii software sales worldwide since launch are at 65.81 million, with Mario Party 8 alone selling 2.89 million copies.

Come the end of this fiscal year, Nintendo predict its net sales to be at 1.55 trillion (US$ 13.59 billion) with a net income of ¥ 275.0 billion (US .41 billion).
