Nintendo profits soar thanks to the Wii and DS

Wii and DS - Image 1It seems the popularity of Nintendo’s website really did mirror sales. Why is that? The Japanese firm’s profit from the period of April to December reached Â¥ 131.9 billion (roughly US$ 1.09 billion), which is way higher than the Â¥ 92.2 billion they amassed from the April- December 2005 period. Aside from that Ninty also disclosed that they had met their target of shipping four million Wiis by year end.

The reason for the profit boost? The DS and the Wii. The DS has been lording over the handheld arena for quite some time now, thanks to its surge in popularity with casual gamers.

Thanks to its fun image and unique controller, the Wii has also been a steady revenue maker for Nintendo.  Yasuhink Hirakawa, asset manager at Tokyo’s DLIBJ, only had this to say about Ninty’s success: “At the moment it looks like Nintendo is the winner”.

The success of the DS and Wii is leading Nintendo to dream and aim higher as they set a bolder profit forecasts for the full financial year. They’ve predicted that their profits would continue to rise by 28% for the year to March 31. Dreaming big could only lead to hitting the jackpot or waking up to the reality of the business. Whatever happens, we’ll surely keep you posted.
