Nintendo World Holds SSBM Tournament Throughout May

I must have missed the e-mail, but Nintendo World in New York City is holding tournaments every Saturday in May. That would be May 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th. Before you go away, no, it’s not the noobfest that took place a while back. This one is actually pretty well run. Nintendo did learn from its mistake and the new rules are much better. A little digging around SmashBoards got me this information.

  • All characters available
  • You can change characters throughout the tournament
  • Double elimination
  • 1v1
  • No items
  • Best of 1 (due to time constraints)
  • 3 stock with 8 minute time limit
  • Stage set to random (with some banned similar to MLG rules)

I know some of those sound really basic, but the last tournament seriously did not have some of these rules in place. It’s considered one huge tournament throughout the month. You can only enter for one weekend. 64 people will play each weekend making it, essentially, a 256 person tournament. There is absolutely no entry fee and the grand prize includes a personal party at Nintendo World for you and 20 friends as well as a DS Lite! The finals will include the winners from every weekend in May. It will be held some time in June.

It’s great to see Nintendo making an attempt at a real Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament after the fiasco last time! Hopefully they do some more of these and have some official online ones in Super Smash Bros. Brawl! If you want to take place in these May tournaments, pre-register using the phone number at the website by clicking “Read.” Those who don’t pre-register cannot enter!
