Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s president and CEO had a meeting with the gaming company’s investors, going over topics that included details about the Wii’s new gift-giving feature and many others. Some of the points that were discussed were about the possible new incarnations of the DS, and the future of the Wii.
Iwata emphasized that Nintendo has no plans of producing new hardware for the DS, as the company already has a large install base dedicated to the DS and they “could not leverage that if (Nintendo) introduced new hardware”. The Nintendo bigwig also squashed all talks of a DS phone in the near future:
I cannot imagine that, in the future, a single portable device will be able to provide every need for all the daily issues people have, and I do not share a vision that DS has to be merged with cell phones in the future. …As far as the structure of todayÂ’s phone business is concerned, Nintendo does not have much interest.
As for the ever-popular waggly console, the Wii, Iwata wanted Nintendo’s investors to know that they are not in any way contented with the way the Wii is right now, saying that the Wii still has a lot to improve, such as the addition of more Wii Channels. Speaking of being contented with the status quo, Iwata also expressed some concern regarding the possibility of too much success getting into the heads of Nintendo employees.
“How we can prevent that? How we can keep the same motivation that we used to have two or three years ago? How to maintain that kind of mindset is most important,” Iwata said.
