Nintendo’s Planning GM: No different-colored Wiis yet

WiiIt turns out that we’re not going to see different-colored Wiis anytime soon. In a recent interview for the latest edition of Nintendo Dream magazine, NintendoÂ’s Planning General Manager, Mitsuaki Hagishima, said that at this stage, Nintendo has no plans to release different-colored Wii consoles.

Apparently, this came about due to Nintendo’s push for an early console launch. In order to meet demand and make the most of production, they’ve had to manufacture the console, its controller, and all its other attachments only in white.

There is a bit of good news for those who want a non-white Wii (like us), though. According to Hagishima, Nintendo plans to release the Wii-mote in different color schemes in the future. Plus, note the crucial “at this stage” bit in Hagishima’s statement. With Nintendo’s past track record of releasing different color themes for its handhelds, we don’t think it’s a stretch to start expecting a red Wii late next year. We expect the variants to start rolling out once sales and supply issues settle down.

Hagishima also talked about the reasons why Nintendo decided to push for the Wii’s early American release, which is the very first time a Nintendo home console gets to be released in the Americas before Japan. According to Hagishima, the decision was made to get a jump start on the crucial Thanksgiving sales period.
