No 3rd Party Wii Online Until 2007
While previewing Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam by Activision, IGN learned that there would be split-screen multiplayer, but no online component.
[An online component] isn’t planned. Activision would not say why, but IGN has separately learned from multiple development sources that Nintendo will not release Wii Wi-Fi Connection libraries to third parties until early 2007, which means that no third party launch title will have an online mode.
This is just after we learn that Call of Duty 3, another Wii game, will not have online play either. Does this mean that Nintendo has not yet finished the WiFi library for the Wii version of the Nintendo WiFi Connection? Hopefully this means that they’re improving the service instead of using the same flawed system as the DS’ online play. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, previously set to be a launch game, probably won’t make launch either. It was set to use the WiFi Connection as well.
