No Hard Drive? Try Running XBLA from a CD-R/DVD-R

Xbox Live ArcadeHmmm… actually, let’s say you have a hard drive on your Xbox 360, but you just don’t have any more space. What can you do?

For one thing, it seems there’s now a way to play XBLA without being on the actual hard drive. That should save you some space, right? According to the 360 Game Saves site, Xbox Live Arcade titles can actually still play when executed from a CD-R or DVD-R. Here’s the skinny straight from them:

XBLA on HDD reside in this format on Partition3 of HardDrive. /Content/0000000000000000/*TitleID*/000D0000/*XBLA Game*

Burning this directory structure to any writable disk and placed in a console will populate the XBLA Menu with the titles on the disk. Of course, they will still run in TRIAL mode unless said console has purchased this content. However, we felt this was still useful for people with Memory Units that can only hold one title at a time or even people without any storage options at all.

As you can see, the solution isn’t perfect (it also isn’t a way for you to really steal anything, which is a good thing), but it is useful when you can see yourself needing that teeny bit of extra space.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t work for demos, videos, profiles and saves, in case you were wondering. You’ll just have to be careful what you put into your console. Good luck, gamers!
