No Immediate Price Drop Coming for Xbox 360

Xbox 360For all you “value hunters” out there waiting for Microsoft to lower prices for the upcoming next-gen console wars, you better go ahead and get out your wallet.

According to Microsoft Europe representative Chris Lewis, there are no immediate plans to drop the price of the Xbox 360. This comes after rumors that Microsoft would drop the price on the 360 by at least $100 to battle the higher PlayStation 3 launch prices. The PS3 launch, set for November, has set prices of $499 and $599 for its upcoming console.

Lewis told Club Skill that, “We have no plans to make any price adjustment. The last couple of days have reinforced the fact that we have a great value proposition, giving consumers choice, thanks to the core system. WeÂ’re not forcing the consumer down a route with HD playback. We certainly donÂ’t think itÂ’s necessary to make any changes to the current price point.”

Rats! Ah well…

Anyway, he also answered rumors of an upcoming Xbox handheld console.

“WeÂ’ve got quite a lot going on. ItÂ’s a hugely significant time for us and for gaming in general. We donÂ’t have any plans to do anything in the handheld space,” Lewis said. “What we see as important is convergence and what weÂ’re doing with Live Anywhere presents a huge step forward in terms of being able to experience the games on the device of your choice.”

So, to recap: no price drop, no handheld Xbox, but get excited about Live Anywhere. Sigh.
