No Plans for Xbox 360 Internal HD DVD

xbox360hddvdA couple of days ago, the Xbox 360 rumor mill was in full swing. The grapevine was filled to bursting with stories about Microsoft skipping the $100 price drop because there were plans afoot to bundle their HD DVD drive with a standard Xbox 360 console. Some folks may have gotten too excited with the “news” that they started thinking that the next-gen console will have a built-in internal HD DVD. Fanning the rumor flame is one Toshiba executive who hinted at an internal drive for the Xbox 360.

Well, say goodbye to your internal HD-DVD dreams. Cesar Menendez of the Microsoft Games Global Marketing team has shot down both rumors with a single blow. Here’s what he said:

Saw a few stories online about an Xbox 360 with a built-in HD DVD drive: not true. We have no plans to release an Xbox 360 with an internal HD DVD. What we showcased at E3 was an external HD DVD drive, and we’re sticking with that.

We’ve always had a games-first emphasis with the Xbox, but some consumers can build on the platform – like by adding a Windows Media Center Edition PC. By keeping the drive external, we’re offering consumers a choice in creating their own hi-def experiences. So: no plans for an internal HD DVD.
