No Xbox 360 price cut for Japan

Japanese Yen - Image 1Despite a waning interest among Japanese gamers, Microsoft doesn’t have any plans to grant price cuts in order to gain leverage in the Japanese market. “Xbox prices are very competitive,” said Darren Huston, president of Microsoft’s Japan unit, saying that they don’t intend to lower prices for the meantime.

And Xbox 360 prices are already quite competitive indeed. A basic 360 unit is sold at 29,800 yen or US$ 240, while a basic PS3 unit costs about 49,980 yen (US$ 405), and 24,999 yen (US$ 202) for the Wii.

With Microsoft getting flak from high Xbox 360 failure rates and increasing the warranty period for up to three years as a result (the move costing a cool US$ 1.05 to $US 1.15), it seems probable that they couldn’t afford any price cuts for the meantime.

Notwithstanding the Xbox 360 problems brewing in the U.S., Microsoft will still go through with the planned release of the Xbox Elite in Japan on October 11.
