NPD charts show PS3 selling less than GameCube

NPD numbers for PS3 and GameCube sales - Image 1GamePro grabbed NPD‘s records of hardware sales, and stumbled on something interesting along the way. When the Sony PlayStation 3’s sales numbers during the first 10 months after release is compared to Nintendo’s last generation console, the GameCube, Sony’s home entertainment powerhouse is obviously lagging behind.

The GameCube, which most consider as a distant third-placer behind the PS2 and Microsoft’s Xbox, sold 2,120,000 two months before it celebrated its first birthday. The PS3, on the other hand, sold only 1,742,000 during the same period. At this rate, if NPD’s numbers are accurate, Sony’s entry in this generation’s console race might fare worse than the GameCube.

Kaz Hirai blamed production issues (not Sony PS3 pricing), which is apparently the reason why Sony took a step to cut DRAM chip development costs. Our two cents here is that gamers are waiting for premiere titles to hit the Sony PS3, and time will tell if we’re right on the money.
