Games Already in Recession, says NPD - Image 1With news of cutbacks and layoffs popping up everywhere, I think it’s about time we accept that the video game industry really isn’t recession proof.

If you needed a second opinion on that though, the NPD Group recently came to the same conclusion. According to their senior account manager Michael Klotz, “we’re already being affected by the recession.”

Don’t run out screaming into the streets and start putting bats to windows though. The industry is growing, it’s just not growing as fast as it should if it weren’t for the recession. According to Klotz, the industry grew 9% in August, declined 7% in September, but grew again by 7% in October, and 8% in November.

The game industry is growing, but it has been impacted by the recession. We probably would have seen even more growth if it hadn’t been impacted by the current economic climate in the U.S.

He also notes that one out of every four dollars people set aside for entertainment is being spent on games. (I wonder how many of those four dollars are spent on po- never mind.)
