OGDC 2007: Sony pops expansion plans for PlayStation Network

Alongside the Northern Exposure conference happening in Europe, the Online Game Development Conference went on its second day at Seattle, bringing together developers from the online platform segment of the industry. Addressing issues regarding console online connectivity and its possible opportunities, a panel discussion suddenly found themselves dabbling on the PlayStation Network.

Sony‘s director of third-party developer relations, Michael Shorrock, took the liberty to slip in a few crystal-clear details about the PlayStation Network. He remarked that the PlayStation Network was a meeting place for developers and publishers alike – a “loyalty catalyst for PlayStation platforms.”

Not only just limiting themselves to the PlayStation Store, Shorrock revealed that the unveiling of their entire service should reflect in the coming months. He noted that PSN, together with these added services, hopefully “enables” creative development for content on the platform – ironically including user-created content.

The six key components are comprised of Services/VOD, the PlayStation Store, In-game/Network Advertising, Wireless, and the PlayStation Home. Services/VOD picks up the “direct downloadable full-length movie and TV and music content” side of the Network. Details about the In-game/Network Advertising services, as Sony’s core service, are still to be further revealed in the future.

The Wireless feature will allow PSP and mobile gamers to stay connected to the Network, while permitting them to play games over the medium. The PlayStation Home was mentioned to be the 3D version of the PlayStation Network and should offer just about every service, only this time players can choose their own avatar and traverse the virtual world.
