Old (good) news from Wal-Mart PS3 training site

The employee PS3 training site for Wal-Mart Canada is full of fun stuff. Yes, the layout is terrible. Yes, the font suddenly changes and there’s no artistic merit to any of it (even the images are pixelated). But we’re guessing it’s a far, far better training tool than any Wal-Mart employee has ever known.

Yes, it looks like a legit Wal-Mart site. Comments across the Internet from people who say they are Wal-Mart Canada employees confirm this. And to access the site, you need your store name as one of the log-in requirements.

At the bottom of the site it says “Distance Learning, Inc. 1998-2006. All other content is expressly copyrighted by Sony Training,” so it looks like this website was made by the Internet-based learning company for Wal-Mart Canada.

And what about the fun stuff on the site? Well, you can geek out at facts like this:

  • PS3 FEATURES:
  • Backward Compatible: Yes, with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.
  • Online: Wi-Fi wireless internet networking (60GB), built-in Ethernet connection.
  • Will play music CD’s, Super Audio CD’s (SACD), and DVD.
  • 4 USB 2.0 Ports
  • Region Free Software: Games will be playable in any region of the world. However films will remain limited to their region of origin.

Region free software. That was one of Sony’s earliest bits of good news (we learned about this back in March). Anyway, this is what we really liked from the site:

  • The Cell is actually 7 SPUs (Synthetic Processing Units) each running at 3.2 GHZ
  • The Cell Processor is essentially as powerful as 3 Xbox 360 CPUs or 35 PlayStation 2 CPUs

Wow. When it’s put in black-and-white like that (it was in bold text on the site, too), there’s no denying the sheer processing power of this machine. Seven SPUs running at 3.2GHz each? Seven SPUs running at 3.2GHz each! Sony’s earlier claim of being 10 times as fast as Intel’s most powerful Pentium is suddenly a lot more believable to the skeptics out there.
