On Blu-ray This Week: October 15 to October 21, 2007
The past few Blu-ray releases have been horror fests (The Fly, 28 Days Later, George A. Romero flicks, just to name a few) and since it is still October, there’s no reason for the fun to stop. This week, On Blu-ray lists a number of horror, suspense, plus a dash of sci-fi titles to liven up your home entertainment systems.
If you think the previous scare-a-thons were scary enough, you should see what titles are creeping on the shelves this week. We got ten biblical plagues, a concert, six Masters of Horror, two invisible guys, and a lot of angry ghosts. Let’s check them out, shall we?
Where else do you find the likes of John Carpenter, William Malone, Dario Argento, and other great directors of the horror genre? The television series Masters of Horror of course. The Masters are certainly at their best with Volumes 1 and 2. Season One: Volume 1 of the series is looking to scare the heck out of us with three titles: Cigarette Burns, Dreams in the Witch House, and Fair-Haired Child. Volume 2 aspires to do the same with Jenifer, Sick Girl, and Deer Woman. This writer has a staunch rule for herself about these titles and that’s to never watch them alone.

Blood, frogs, lice, beasts, pestilence, boils, fiery hail, locusts, darkness, and death of the first born. Those are Ten Plagues of Egypt, and they make an appearance in the 2007 film, The Reaping. Hilary Swank stars as a religious phenomena expert (think the Mythbusters busting “miracles” instead of myths). How do you go up against ten plagues when Moses is not there when you need him?
Next in the list comes Kevin Bacon as scientist Sebastian Caine in Hollow Man, a movie based loosely on H.G. Well’s The Invisible Man. What do you do when nobody can see you? You can pretty much get away with what you want since nobody can see you play voyeur, steal, or kill for that matter.
Can you handle the horror? Here are the Blu-ray releases for this week (October 15 to October 21, 2007):
- The Reaping (Warner Bros.)
- Hollow Man: Director’s Cut (Sony Pictures)
