Pachter forecast on NPD results: September was a merry month for hardware sales

Pachter predicts that Master Chief's giving healthy support for the other consoles too, sales-wise - Image 1Wedbush Morgan is back once again with another batch of market predictions, shortly before the announcement of NPD‘s official sales reports for the month of September. And much like  Colin Sebastian’s predictions for the same time period, Pachter is predicting strong sales for Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 console, whose growth was pushed along thanks to Halo 3 by Bungie Studios.

Aside from the MS console, Pachter also predicted that Halo 3 would also help bolster September’s overall software sales to US$ 655 million. That’s a 47 percent increase compared to the figures from exactly a year ago. As the Wedbush analyst further elaborated on how the game would carry its momentum will into the holiday season:

Although we think that sales of Halo 3 accounted for virtually all of the growth during the month, we think that the game drove hardware sales and positions the industry for even greater sales in November and December, when many Halo players will be ready for a new challenge. We are optimistic about software sales through the end of the year.

Pachter estimates MS to have sold around 450,000 units for September, followed along by the Nintendo Wii at 425,000 units, and by the Sony PlayStation 3 at 150,000. The PSP was further predicted to garner 252,000 sales. Pachter predicted that The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo; DS), Heavenly Sword (Sony PlayStation 3), and Stranglehold (Midway Games; PS3, Xbox 360) would be the other top titles for September.

As for the winning third-party publishers for September, Pachter predicted that EA would be the clear leader at US$ 130 million in software sales. followed by Activision at US$ 47 million, and Take-Two at US$ 30 million.

Moving past September, Pachter also predicted that price cuts for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 were coming soon, even as Sony released their new 40 GB PS3:

We think that the introduction of the new 40Gb PS3 at a US$ 399 price point is imminent, with an announcement likely before the end of October. We also think a PS2 price cut to US$ 99 is possible before the end of the year.

Pachter further predicted that Microsoft may also be readying the release of their Xbox 360 Arcade pack. Guys who wish to see just how accurate Pachter’s predictions are will want to mark their calendars for October 18 (Thursday), when NPD release their official September report.
