Pachter: new Wii in two or three years?

Wii - Image 1Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicts that in response to consumer demand, Nintendo will be releasing a new high-definition Wii within 2-3 years, breaking the traditional five-year cycle. Pachter suggests that the new Wii would have improved graphics, which would also address the hardcore gamers’ concerns that the Wii is just a fad.

The prediction isn’t unwarranted though. The Wii is enjoying tremendous commercial success right now and isn’t showing any signs of stopping. This does bring up the question of whether it would suffer the same problems Sony is facing right now with the PS3. Right now the PS2 is even more popular than its next-gen counterpart. If a new Wii is introduced that early in the market it might be facing the same danger.

But then there’s not enough leeway right now for Microsoft and Sony to release a new console in the near future. Should Nintendo choose to release a console within two or three years, they’d have the field all to themselves.

And PS3-type processor in a Wii would be pretty sweet.
