This time, Hines took the time to elaborate about the flexible sandbox environment of Fallout 3 as well as how it differs from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in terms of how “open-ended” the game is.
While he admitted that it isn’t as open as Oblivion in terms of freely exploring the game environment, he also explained that the twelve different endings make up for this in terms of replayability. He elaborates on this by saying:
There will be somewhere between nine to 12 different endings to the game based on what you’ve done in the game. So it’s something that is inherently a diverging path. It may be some of the same things but doing them in very different ways, and ultimately that will define your gameplay experience.
Hines threw in an example where the player has the option of either blowing up the town of Megaton or saving it from a gristly nuclear fallout. Your decision greatly affects what happens to the events connected to the town whether or not you save it from destruction.
Gamers can expect Fallout 3 to hit shelves next year in Autumn. Hopefully, Bethesda will be able to release more eyecandy for the game. Until then, we’ll be keeping our eye out for more updates from the game.
