Peter Molyneux teases us with more hints of Fable 2
Peter Molyneux has never been known for his subtlety. Putting this into account, it’s rather odd to see him play coy and drop hints here and there about Lionhead Studios‘ upcoming RPG fantasy game, Fable 2.
In an interview conducted by 1Up after the Games Convention Developers Conference in Germany, Molyneux talked about some of the new features that Fable 2 will try to incorporate to appeal to both fans of the series and new gamers alike.
Two of these previously emphasized features were the combat system and the emotional attachments the main character will have during the game. He explains further about the combat system, saying that they wanted to create a unique system that would still appeal to old players and those new to the series as well. They wanted to extend this concept as far as having an experienced player suddenly shove the controls to a novice and allowing him or her to finish the fight, but the veteran could show the newbie how cool combat could be.
Also, Molyneux talked about why death is such an ephemeral state that your character can go through in-game. He explains that concept in detail:
I think a lot of games are starting to reconsider death – the idea of restarting time after time is boring and tedious. I wanted to think of a new way of dealing with death in a game. There are two things to bear in mind here; don’t think of it as death more as being incapacitated for a while. Why should you have to restart a battle? Why not just change the definition of a battle if you fall? But to have tension in fights you need to have some cost and if that cost is about something you’ve collected in the game such as experience or money then the battle will mean more to you.
Well, it definitely beats doing the whole “game over: restart, load game or exit” deal. Although, this sounds suspiciously like how a typical MMORPG “death and rebirth” cycle goes. Speaking of online play, when pressed on how the game’s online features would extend the overall game experience, he ended the interview with these words: “I can’t say anything about my favorite feature!”
Sadly, people may still have to wait a long while for this game to hit the shelves. Fable 2 will be coming out for the Xbox 360 most likely sometime next year.
