PGR 4’s lead designers think about ATVs and deserts for the next game
With Bizarre Creations‘ Project Gotham Racing 4 going gold, Ged Talbert, the lead designer of the series has already turned his attention to the fifth iteration of the series. He mentioned at an interview with CVG what they were doing at the studios as well as what we should be seeing in the future.
Talbert pointed out that they were already in the process of deconstructing PGR 4, noting certain problem spots that they wanted to address in a future release, such as more trackside damage, more particles and smoke effects, and a bigger damage system. After that he pointed out what PGR 5 would focus on:
Next time it’s more on the detail. That’s what we think; we think the devil’s in the detail. Anyone can make a good looking game but the top games blow you away by being super-realistic, adding things that you didn’t expect and surprising you.
What he said is very true, considering he did say that they would be taking the game out of the city. Yes, this means big jumps and more hangtime as the game begins to include desert runs. Given the change of venue, they’re also going to be adding appropriate vehicles such as ATV type bikes. Here’s what Talbert had to say about it:
I personally believe there’s a lot we can do by taking our vehicles we’ve already got and putting them into different, more interesting environments. It doesn’t always mean outside of the city, it just means getting lets say more elevation – somewhere we can finally do big jumps.
That’s what we’re looking for in the next game; going to deserts – that kind of stuff. Seeing how they affect the gameplay, see if we can get Kudos working their as well. We could bring cruisers in, we could bring ATV-type bikes in. None of these are definite, but there’s are whole world of things for us to do.
It might be some time before we see PGR 5, considering that PGR 4 is slated to come out this October 2. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see that the developers are already thinking about the sequel to this release.
