Ken Kutaragi goes on stage and declares that the PlayStation 3 will be expensive due to its high-tech nature.

At the recent Sony Computer Entertainment PlayStation meeting, Ken Kutaragi went on stage to talk about the current status of PlayStation 3.

First, Kutaragi talked about the expected life cycle of the PS3, and the current movement from standard television to HDTV. “We’re looking at a life cycle of 10 years with the PlayStation 3. We’re currently shifting from standard TVs to HDTVs… But in the next couple of years, most flat-panel TVs will be full HD. We’re releasing the PS3 with full HD features from the start so that consumers won’t have to buy another version of the console in the future. For the same reason, we’re using Blu-ray as the PS3’s disc format,” Kutaragi told the audience.

Kutaragi then went on to say that the PlayStation 3’s advanced technologies will lead to it having an expensive price, but not a price that would stop people from buying the console if they wanted it. “I’m aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 can’t be offered at a price that’s targeted towards households. I think everyone can still buy it if they wanted to. But we’re aiming for consumers throughout the world. So we’re going to have to do our best [with the price point,]” said Kutaragi.

Kutaragi unfortunately did not reveal a price. “I’m not going to reveal its price today,” he said. “I’m going to only say that it’ll be expensive.”
