PlayStation.com Japan to not sell PS3s
We’re aware that you’re all sick and tired of “negative” Sony news, and not just because some of you are Sony fans, but because the “bad” news just goes on and on. You get reactions like: “What? Sony’s failing! Again? O Rly? Ya Rly? Phffft!” So, we’ll try to report this bit of possibly negative news as “hands off” as possible.
It is common knowledge that console makers are sort of hands-off when it comes to third party pre-orders; the following is sort of related to the whole pre-order hullabaloo. The Japanese PlayStation.com site has previously stated that due to limited stock it will begin pre-orders in a quiet fashion. Well, Sony has recently released a statement announcing that it won’t be selling launch PS3 units through its own PlayStation.com site, citing shortages of both accessories and the system itself.
If you take a look at PlayStation.com’s history, the site began e-commerce prior to the release of the PlayStation 2, and went through major server problems at the time. This of course was due to the demand for pre-launch pre-orders. One should note though, that they should have anticipated the demand that their product will generate, after all they are quite proud of their creations right?
PlayStation.com also held pre-orders, but avoided server problems by implementing a system wherein people had to pre-order their pre-order.
Looks like long lines at retail is good for the press.
