PlayStation Console Meets Its End

December of 1994 marks SonyÂ’s entrance into the global gaming industry with PlayStation.  The launch of the PS3 effectively pulls the plug on Sony’s original PlayStation console.  PlayStation has been around for more than 11 years and last September PlayStation and PSOne redesign marked the “100 million units sold milestone,” an extraordinary accomplishment by any standard.

Sony noted the end of the PlayStation production does not mean the end of availability.  The hardware and software that placed Sony on the gaming world map continues to sell world wide.  For those PS diehards, if PS games are difficult to find, Sony announced that a PS emulator for the PSP will soon be available.  The games for this emulator will be digitally distributed.

To put things in perspective, the Atari 2600 gaming console began life in 1977 and Atari ended production in 1991.  Nevertheless, PlayStationÂ’s production run of over ten years is impressive.
