Poke-power: Pokemon is Nintendo’s ultimate million seller

A recent jaunt to NeoGAF gave us some new information about the Japan’s best-selling games of all time. Somehow, we managed to be a bit surprised because the ultimate million sellers aren’t the Links and Marios of the different companies. Rather, Pikachus and Jigglypuffs seem to reign supreme in the video game hierarchy.

Here are the top ten best-sellers of all time in Japan, with the numbers to the right indicating the total number of units sold in millions:

  1. Pocket Monster Red/Green                         8.22
  2. Pocket Monster Silver/Gold                         7.19
  3. Super Mario Brothers + Disk System ver.   6.81
  4. Pocket Monsters Ruby/Sapphire                 5.34
  5. Pocket Monsters Diamond/Pearl                 5.17
  6. New Super Mario Brothers                          4.46
  7. More Brain Training                                     4.30
  8. Tetris                                                          4.24
  9. Hit The Animal Forest                                  4.21
  10. Super Mario Land                                        4.19

As you can see, the top five is dominated by Pikachu and his rabid friends. Even more surprising is the rapid rise of Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl as a best seller. Of course, with the number of DS units across Japan these days, it’s almost impossible to have believed that Pokemon Diamond/Pearl wouldn’t become big.

On another note, let this serve as a fanboy’s evidence of the awesomeness of Nintendo Company Ltd. This is Japan’s best-sellers list of all time for all consoles. The first mention of any non-Nintendo game in the list comes at number 11, with Dragon Quest VII (4.14), with Final Fantasy VII (4.00) close behind at the twelfth spot.
