40GB PS3 - Image 1While a lot of people are worried that backwards compatibility on the Sony PlayStation 3 may die along with the discontinuation of the 80GB SKU, a glimmer of hope was seen in EGM‘s latest issue.

PlayStation Network director Eric Lempell was interviewed and he said that there were certain “possibilities” in the matter.

According to the PSN head, Sony’s online service could host PlayStation 2 titles and run them on the PS3 with software emulation. Still, he made it clear that there are no solid plans regarding such a setup.

“We haven’t talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles,” Lempell said.

The 80GB PS3 is currently the only PS3 model in stores with the ability to emulate the PS2’s Emotion Engine chip. The cheaper, lower-end 40GB SKU discards backwards compatibility altogether.
