PS3 controller battery update

The controller

We’ve already told you guys about Sony‘s PS3 controllers and its battery packs. Well, here’s an update to that. A Sony spokesperson has informed GamesIndustry.biz that the company will make available a service to replace their wireless PS3 controllers “when and if” the non removable lithium batteries in the controllers degrade.

The Sony spokesperson has this to say regarding reports that customers will have to purchase new controllers if the batteries on the wireless controllers go kaput:

This is a purely speculative story and is largely untrue. The latest generation of Lithium Polymer batteries hardly suffer any memory effect at all, so it’ll be many years before there’s any degradation in terms of battery performance. When and if this happens, then of course we will be providing a service to exchange these items.

If the charge for this “when and if” replacement service is still a bit too rich for your blood, well, you can take comfort in the fact that the controllers can still be used via USB cable. It wouldn’t be wireless, but at least you still have a functioning controller.
