PS3 game downloads available soon from Sony

You guys know what this is.It seems Sony’s finally decided to cut out the middleman and sell directly to gamers. According to SCE Europe VP of Technology Paul Holman (yep, same guy who talked PS4), Sony will be creating a website that’ll directly sell games, movies, and apps for the PS3 and PS2. Gamers can either purchase the items or download them directly to their PS3s or PS2s.

“The site will have movie trailers, 1080p Blu-Ray movies and game clips as well as full movie and game titles for direct purchase by a consumer,” said Holman. “We believe that this will appeal to PS3 users while also allowing new developers to market their developments to the PS3 user.”

By eliminating the distributor and retail margins, Sony stands to save at least 30% of the retail values for the software being sold. This’ll also give gamers the chance to purchase games that are not being carried by their local retailers, like niche games such as Irish Gaelic Football (Holman’s example).

No info yet on when the site will launch, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for any news.
