After 16 long months of Wii domination in Japan, the PS3 finally overtook the numbers, taking away a sweet 146,948 units throughout March, compared to the Wii’s 99,335. Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 was at a far-away 43,172, data from Enterbrain showed.

It would appear that Sega‘s Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 (Yakuza 3) and Capcom‘s Resident Evil 5‘s combo-release had a lot to do with this sudden surge in PS3 sales. However, Mizuho Investors Securities analyst Etsuko Tamura warns PS3 fans to not celebrate all to much yet.

According to him, despite this historical sales activity of the PS3 in Japan, it will remain unlikely to be a threat to the Wii’s global dominance. That’s because more software makers are investing more on the Wii because of its broad market base.

Still. Hooray for the PS3!
