PS3 launch Q&A with Peter Dille

T-minus ten and counting...Gamespot decided to tap SCEA Senior VP for Marketing Peter Dille on the shoulder and ask if they could sit down for a tete-a-tete during Gamers’ Day. Or is it that SVP Dille tapped Gamespot on the shoulder and asked if they could sit down to talk? No matter, Gamespot and Peter got to talking about the PS3’s US launch plans.

Now, a lot of the stuff Peter told Gamespot is nothing new, since it’s a rehash of all the marketing Sony has put out until now –  a console that’ll last for 10 years or so, SIXAXIS, Blu-Ray right out of the box, and so forth. But he did mention a couple of notable items, especially a rough idea of what Sony’s got in store with the Playstation Network.

Let’s start off with one word that’s sure to raise a hue and cry from our readership: microtransactions (cue Psycho violin screech). Peter says that we’re gonna see it for games like Resistance: Fall of Man (downloadable maps and all). He added:

It’s a great way to offer additional content…”And those will be from 50 cents up to a couple of bucks. We’re leaving it up to the publishers and developers. We’ll have our pricing models for the Sony first-party games, but we’re not dictating what the third party should be charging. That’s really up to them on a game-by-game basis.

You know, if those micropayable downloads really are priced fifty cents to a couple of bucks per pop, and it’s not a possible advertising slipup…oh thank goodness. We’re gonna be watching this closely.

Next is that other category of downloadables: downloadable games (cue Hallelujah!). There will be the new-built PS3 downloadable games, like Criminal Crackdown. Some of these games will be 1080p from the start; others won’t. Then there will be all those classic PSOne and PS2 games, alongside the fact that the PS3 will be backwards-compatible.

Finally, there are some “great PlayStation games on the (PS Network)” planned that will be playable on the PSP and, in the future, on the PS3, says Dille. Sony’s working on getting a Day One lineup of old-school PS games ready for lineup, but that list will definitely grow after launch.
