PS3 may be shut out from Team Fortress 2 cross-platform play
When Valve bigwigs revealed that the PS3’s online feature was “kind of scary” for them, the idea of gamers being able to play Team Fortress 2 across the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms was further thrown into question. As revealed in an IGN interview with Valve, it seems that the PS3 will indeed be shut out of Team Fortress 2‘s cross-platform multiplayer gaming loop.
Valve’s Doug Lombardi had this to say in the interview:
The PS3 version is being done by EA over in the UK, and they don’t have all the networking stuff in yet to do anything other than [pause] it’s rending and running the games and whatnot, but they’re still dropping in the network layers. They’re going to be using a piece of code that EA uses for its PS3 multiplayer stuff. Chances are the PS3 version will only play other PS3s. There’s zero chance of them talking to 360s.
Cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and PC gamers looks like a go, though, as Lombardi also says in the interview that “technically, it’s done.” As for whatever Electronic Arts comes up with for the PS3, we’ll just have to wait and see.
