PS3 plays older games, region lock still works
No ponies and kittens here folks, just some good and bad news straight from the Gamespot blogger’s mouth. Sony‘s PR person came over to show off the console, and showed off the XMB navigation to the staff. Here’s the kicker: there are pictures of their background compatibility tests.
Their first test was to see how the PS3 reads PS2 discs. In this case, it reads PS2 discs well enough, calling them PlayStation 2 Format Discs. If you want to save games from the PS2 and PS1 on the actual PS3, the console will prompt you to make an internal memory card.
Gran Turismo 4 was their tested PS2 game, and it worked fine. More surprisingly, they used Battle Arena Toshinden 3 as their test game for PS1 compatibility, and they also said it worked perfectly. This means that if you’ve been following the PlayStation scene for the longest time, you’ve got a very long list of games you can go back to, including some of the best RPGs ever made.
Speaking of RPGs, their Japanese compatibility test used Kingdom Hearts II. Whether or not this is a deal-breaker for you depends on how many games you import, but we’ll let the picture below tell you everything you need to know.
