PS3 price is just right, says Yves Guillemot
Sony fans who love the PlayStation have been screaming for a price cut ever since PS3’s launch. Even Sony CEO agrees that dropping the steep price would make a lot happy. Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft‘s CEO who also called for a significantly cheaper PS3, actually believes that the console’s launch tag was right on the money.
Guillemot gave props to PS3 and its “great launch.” He told Games Industry, “[Sony has] sold a machine that is actually expensive to build at the right price for consumers. It’s just that if we want more consumers, we’ll have to have a price that will make more people come in.”
Those who kept tabs on launch would know that a huge number of units bought were then posted on eBay for ridiculous prices. Even so, it’s not enough to say that people actually bought a PS3 to gain money from it. Definitely not.
When asked about his request for a price cut, he said “I was just saying that in the last generation, we had machines that were at a lower price and they were selling more. It’s just something to consider for all the manufacturers, that the price of the machine has a huge impact on the number of machines sold.”
True enough, PS3 sales are suffering across the board. Wii is about to reach Xbox 360’s numbers despite an early release advantage, but Sony’s dark horse is barely moving. Let Guillemot’s word reach the gaming gods, so we can finally enjoy a much more affordable powerhouse.
