PS3 Shipments Cut In Half Due To Blu-Ray Shortage

ps3

Sony may have to cut down the shipments of PS3 units for its November launch due to blue laser diodes shortage. Before any of you guys start reacting violently, it’s not as bad as it sounds. Really.

So DigiTimes reported that there is currently a shortage of blue laser diodes…what does this mean for the PS3? GamesIndustry.biz says that Sony may be forced to cut down, if not halt, the shipments of PS3 for its November launching because of this shortage. Now, this is the part where we understand you might tend to get too, uh, “fiercely passionate” BUT (and this is a big fat BUT), before you do so, you should know that:

1) manufacturers of blue laser diodes, which are being used in HD-DVDs and Blu-ray players, said that they haven’t been able to improve yield rates, thus, the shortage of these blue laser diodes
2) supply of blue laser diodes won’t be back on track until Spring 2007
3) Sony’s manufacturing arm has reportedly stopped sharing the in-demand diodes with their customers who make HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movie players
4) Why? So that the diodes can be used solely for the production of PS3 units
5) Kaz Hirai clarified that they’re aiming to ship two million units of PS3 worldwide for the November launch, and another 2 million by the end of the year.

See? It’s not as bad as it sounds.
