PS3 US$ 499 price boosts sales to 135% at top 5 retailers

PlayStation 3 - Image 1The decision to grant a US$ 100 price cut on the PS3 has proven to be very beneficial. Only on its second week, the new PS3 price has garnered a high 135% jump in sales from top five retailers. Things were also going well for Sony even before the launch of the price cut: PS3 sales have already risen by 21% by that time.

During the said two weeks, PlayStation hardware sales have increased by 161%, software by 15% and accessories and peripherals by 60%. Not quite bad for a short two-week period.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) said that the PlayStation enjoyed continued solid growth, as proven by a steady 21% increase in total retail sales. The sales amounted to US$ 393 million for North America alone, with about 98,469 units sold.

The PS3 is not alone in its happy sales increase. PSP sales also rose by 31% year-over-year, while the long-standing PS2 sold about 270,763 units in June. Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA, said:

The new price on the 60 GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail. This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games.

Well done, we say. It looks like Sony’s long-term plan is finally rolling.
