PSP finally breaks into DS-dominated Japanese market

tales of phantasia

As you guys probably know, Japan continues to be one of the few markets that the Sony‘s handheld still hasn’t fully infiltrated. The DS still dominates the Japanese market and PSP titles haven’t been making it to the top of the country’s charts…until recently, that is.

PSPworld reports that Tales of Phantasia: Full Voice Edition for the PSP has just sold 66,263 copies, topping the DS title New Super Mario Bros. which sold 53,011 copies. Tales of Phantasia, which is a port of a Super Nintendo game, is only the second PSP title to make it to the top of Japanese video game sales charts. The first ever PSP title to snag the top position in the Japanese charts was Namco BandaiÂ’s SD Gundam G Generation Portable, and this was way back in August. PSPworld also reports that 29,141 PSP consoles were sold. We’re not pro-PSP anti-DS people, but hopefully, the Japanese market becomes more open to PSP titles for the sake of variety.
