PSP Shatters 5 Million Mark
Sony has triumphantly revealed that its handheld debut, the PSP, has shattered the 5 million shipped mark worldwide, despite the fact that it has yet to launch it in Europe.
Speaking at the PlayStation Summit 2005 in Japan yesterday, the manufacturing giant released figures of 2.74 million in North America, and 2.33 million in Japan/Asia. The console launched in those territories in March 2005 and December 2004, respectively.
Games sales figures are also quite impressive. They currently stand at 7.3 million in North America, and 3.9 million in Japan/Asia, while UMD movies have shifted 4.3 million in North America and a meagre 400,000 in Asia. Spider-Man 2 was reportedly the stand-out seller of the bunch.
So, what other PSP gossip was reportedly sifting across the convention floor? Well, not a great deal it appears, although there were a couple of new game announcements promoting typical Japanese quirkiness.
Namco is developing a virtual holiday sim, entitled Portable Resort, which casts players off to a luxurious island in the sun.
Similarly, Muu Muu was reportedly seen to be working on another island sim, where visitors talk with various inhabitants and have their personalities studied. Sounds really odd to us. Maybe a bit like a virtual The Wicker Man?
Perhaps of more mainstream interest was the cinematic trailer shown of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which reportedly showcased a flashback scene in Niblheim. Here, part VII nasty Sephiroth was shown to be stabbing Cloud, and that was about it. No in-game footage was disclosed.
Finally, Sony was promising that there should be 150 PSP titles by March next year.
