A recent interview in the Japanese games press has revealed that Sony is already considering potential new functions for it’s PlayStation Portable handheld, including the introduction of a PSP camera.

Speaking to Famitsu magazine, SCE software platform development boss Izumi Kawanishi revealed that a new messaging application for the portable console was being planned, following hot on the heels of the recently released 2.0 upgrade, that introduces a web browser and wireless photo sharing to the console’s myriad functions.

‘We’re currently considering the implementation of an e-mail system, but we want to think over the fundamental concept behind e-mail,’ screeched Kawanishi-san. ‘We think it would be great if people could communicate together with the use of video and voice.’ Of course, we’ll be needing a PSP-compatible camera and microphone if we’re to realise Kawanishi’s vision, and with this in mind we’d be surprised if Sony didn’t already have something in the pipeline.

Check back for more on this shortly. Or as soon as we hear it. Whatever.
