Bit-tech has written an intensive, in-depth review of 3 popular PSP video converters – PSP Video 9, 3GP video converter, and ATI’s Avivo Video converter.

Bit-tech tested the 3 PSP video converters mentioned above on a very high end system, and analysed each converter to see how well they convert the video, including file size, time taken, and quality of video. They then take into account how user friendly the software is, and what video formats they can convert. Here are the results of their tests:

PSP Video 9
Advantages

  • Friendly user interface, looks good
  • Good customization features, such as different quality of video/audio, different sizes etc
  • Converts a large range of video types
  • Integrates with Videora, a Bittorrent RSS reader
  • Results in small file sizes
  • Automatically copies file to PSP memory stick

Disadvantages

  • No automatic conversion mode, making it not that user friendly – you have to know your stuff to get it to work right as the Auto button goes by your own preset actions, and on the first run you may end up with a video at completely the wrong size.
  • No indication of file size as it is converting

3GP Video Converter
Advantages

  • Supports most mainstream video types (AVI, Divx, MPEG and XviD), but not as many as PSP Video 9
  • Output correctly formatted for PSP, including thumbnail
  • Extensive range of output quality options
  • Quick conversions

Disadvantages

  • Not very user friendly, minimalistic interface where you simply drag and drop
  • Help file is in badly translated Japanese
  • No automatic option
  • Much larger file sizes than PSP Video 9 and Avivo, with roughly the same quality
  • Have to copy to PSP memory stick manually

ATI’s Avivo Converter
Advantages

  • Only one out of the 3 programs that gives information about the input file
  • Vast range of  video formats supported, as with PSP Video 9
  • Easy to use, as it is mostly automatic
  • Fastest of the 3 programs
  • Average file size output

Disadvantages

  • Doesn’t have many customizable options due to being mostly automatic
  • Doesn’t create a thumbnail
  • Have to copy to PSP memory stick manually
  • Requires ATI X1000 graphics card for full version

Conclusion

  • 3GP video converter isn’t worth trying, worst of the 3
  • PSP Video 9 is best for manually changing details of the output file, i.e. Aspect ratio, quality
  • ATI’s Avivo converter is preferred out ofthe 3, being the most user friendly and having the best compromise between speed, file size, and quality.
