PSPs Can Be Used For News, Too

RSS into the PSP, the Bloglines Way (from PocketGamer.co.uk)By marketing the PSP as a multimedia device, Sony‘s emphasizing that the handheld is more than just a gaming device. It can play UMD movies as well as MP3s, and can also be used for data storage (and  homebrews!). And because of its Wi-Fi antenna and built-in web browser (for firmware 2.0’s), busy (and boring) professionals who’ve packed their PSPs into their suitcases to sneak in a game or two during break times may have good reason to break out their PSPs during a boardroom meeting.

So as long as they’re loading up CNN, not GTA.

We’ve featured a program before that allows the PSP to pull in RSS feeds (such as this site) and display them. This is slightly different, as it requires no downloaded program running off the PSP (except, maybe, for third-party or homebrew web browsers). Half the hard work for this isn’t even done on the PSP, as Robert Howells from PocketGamer points out.

Go to your PC and log in the Bloglines website. If you’re not familiar with the site, it’s a free web service that will “pull” RSS feeds from your favorite websites into your Bloglines profile (You may know other sites that provide a similar service. This is pretty much a matter of personal preference).

After subscribing for their free service, simply select the “My Feeds” tab and load up the RSS feeds of your favored news sites (and what other sites you enjoy that also broadcasts RSS). To do so:

  • Go to your selected website.
  • Right-click on the RSS icon and select “Copy Link Location.”
  • Go back to Bloglines > My Feeds, and click “Add.”
  • Right-click in the box that appears and select “Paste.” Click “Subscribe.”

When you’re done subscribing to the RSS feeds of all the sites you want updates from, boot up that PSP, power up the Wi-Fi – let’s hope you’re near a Wi-Fi hotspot! – and connect to the Internet. Log on to the bloglines website and select “My Feeds.” Mission accomplished! You’ve just turned your PSP into a news device. And now you have a legitimate excuse to bring that PSP out during a board meeting: “I wasn’t playing any games! I was checking CNN!”

(Yeah, right. You were checking our PSP Updates RSS feed, weren’t you? Don’t fret, we won’t tell).
