Puerto Rico being rumored for XBLA

Puerto Rico - Image 1Puerto Rico (not the Commonwealth) is one of the more exciting board games around. Players get to be colonial governors on the island of Puerto Rico during the age of Carribean ascendancy. The objective is pretty simple: players need to earn victory points by shipping goods to the Old World.

Anyway, there is an online version of this game over at German-site BrettSpielWelt (BSW) that can be played for free. It was published by Alea while an English-version was created by publisher Rio Grande Games. Unfortunately, the site just addressed its fan base and announced that Puerto Rico will no longer be available. A part of its explanation (This is the translated version) reads,

The rights for the electronic exploitation of the Puerto Rico gaming concept have been sold by Alea to a new owner. Since there is no agreement with that new owner about whether or not the game may be offered here on BSW, Puerto Rico will unfortunately leave BSW tomorrow morning with the server restart.

Electronic exploitation…nice. Now, we don’t mean anything by this but there are rumors that the new owner is actually Microsoft. If that still didn’t computer, let us reiterate: Puerto Rico is being rumored to go to the Xbox Live Arcade and we’re telling you, if it does, it’s not going to be free anymore.

The rumors were based on the latest development that a couple of strategic board games (Carcassone, Alhambra, and Die Siedler von Catan) are coming to XBLA. And Puerto Rico just got added to that list. We’ll wait for future announcements and update you accordingly.
