Rare working on a “brand new” XBLA title

Why must news of you always be so rare? - Image 1According to IGN, Xbox Live Arcade might get a title from Rare Ltd. sometime this year. Nick Burton, software engineer on Kameo, tells as much to Edge Magazine, reporting that a team of ten people are on the case. Now said title is as yet untitled (or unnamed), but Burton says that it’s a “brand new intellectual property”.

That scratches a number of predictions. Donkey Kong (still Nintendo), Perfect Dark, Kameo, Viva Piñata… er, but what about that Banjo-Kazooie announcement from X06? If it’s a brand-new IP – as in something ain’t Rare – it might not be Banjo-Kazooie 3, and if work is still continuing on that game, then we might be looking for box art, not Marketplace. Pure speculation at this point, but we’ll take Edge and IGN’s info at face value, and assume it ain’t any previous Rareware.

Presumably Rare would also be exploring the commercial value of digitally-distributed games by doing this. One could say, Viva Piñata was nice, but someone or something has to bring home the bacon at the end of the day.
