Report: newer PS3 models switched to 128MB flash chip, files moved to HDD

Newer PS3's have 128MB Flash instead of 512MB? - Image 1PS3news celebrated their acquisition of a new 80 GB console by dissecting it and reporting their findings to the rest of us. It seems that the newer PS3 model only has 128 MB of storage, as opposed to the previous 512 MB. Apparently, the console’s more sensitive files are now stored in the hard drive.

Is it an effort to reduce cost production? Or a step to increase security? Either way, it might prove trouble for the PS3 homebrew scene.

After some testing, they found that the console’s more sensitive files – including SPRXs and XMB files – are now stored in the hard drive, where files are harder to get to. PS3news reports:

He took the [56-pin flash chip’s] 16MB dump that was made and flashed it onto a completely blank chip, and reinstalled it in the PS3.

To our surprise, it worked!

Now, if you recall, newer version PS3 Firmwares have asked for a PUP file after formatting/inserting a larger HDD – This may be why! After flashing back just the 16MB of data, it also asked for a PUP file. So, the PUP was given, it installed the missing files fine, and then booted.

It’s not known yet why Sony chose to take such measures. Is it an effort to reduce cost production? Or a step to increase security? Either way, it might prove trouble for the PS3 homebrew scene.
