Resistance: Fall of Man reviewed
Resistance: Fall of Man is a console-defining game. The Xbox 360 has just gotten Gears of War. The Wii will launch with Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Well the PS3 has Resistance: Fall of Man, and you can get it on the same day as the North American launch of the PS3: November 17.
- A storyline to blow your mind: The game premise promises epic proportions (how’s that for alliteration?). In an alternate history universe, Earth never experienced the events of the 30’s and 40’s – no Great Depression, no communism, no World War II. Basically the world is at peace after WWI (aka the Great War), until the Chimera attack. It is now 1951, and England is being invaded. Europe has fallen – and there don’t seem to be any survivors. You’re Sgt. Nathan Hale, an American soldier helping the British in what is basically humanity’s last chance.
- Atmosphere and visuals: The story would seem cheesy if it wasn’t believable. The game makes you suspend your disbelief by surrounding you with a very effective atmosphere – and each place or area in the game has its own unique atmosphere. You don’t get distracted by jitters or jaggies: the framerate is 30, and according to IGN, “it doesn’t falter anywhere.”
- Control and weapons: The SIXAXIS has commands mapped to its buttons so you don’t have to go menu-diving. R2 switches weapons, tilting the controller to the left brings up the map, and tilting right brings up multiplayer stats. Weapons are powerful and unique. Alien. A sniper rifle that slows down time. A gun that shoots bolts that bounce off surfaces.
- Multiplayer: Good 30-40 player games with no lag. Good maps. Different games. According to IGN, this includes “Deathmatch, Meltdown (aka ‘Battle of the Node Control’), Breach (‘Destroy your opponent’s Base’), Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, and Conversion (‘Last Man Standing’).”
IGN gave it an OVERALL 9.1 out of 10. That’s 8.5 for Graphics and Sound got 8.5, 9.0 for Presentation and Gameplay, and 9.5 for Lasting Appeal. If QJ were to come up with a summary, we’d say this: Insomniac Games‘ Fall of Man could have looked and sounded better, there were some slow parts in the campaign mode, but the story is big, the game is huge, and the multiplayer modes will keep you coming back for more.
